one song

The human experience is something that is slowly but surely molded and sharpened by an array of outside influences. Music seems to be the driving force in the constant and fluid destruction and construction of mine.

I have frequently seen the affects music has on the people around me, and because of this I would like to share what I consider to be some of the most beautiful sounds around... "One Song" at a time.

The Temptations

—I Wish It Would Rain

“I Wish It Would Rain” By The Temptations is a rather amazing song that I was shown way back in the day.

This song is about a man that finds out his wife is cheating on him and is waiting for rain so he can leave his house without people seeing the tears on his face.  Kind of sad, but a great song.  What is really sad is that this song was written base on a real situation, and less than a week after its release, the song writer committed suicide. Life is tough sometimes, but at least we have music to get us through almost everything.  If you have someone you love and care about, hold on to them, and take care of them.  You never know when you will find yourself alone.

Mark Isham

—Building A Family

“Building A Family” By Mark Isham appears in the movie “Life as a House.”  The film tells the story of a man who is diagnosed with cancer and uses the remainder of his life to build his dream house, and build a relationship with his son.  If you haven’t seen it, or are looking for a good flick I highly recommend it!

The song itself is very beautiful and takes the listener on a 1:57 steady journey, giving a motivational soundtrack to any event needing it.  Mark Isham has a rather large, extremely impressive archive of past works that can be found in many of todays today films.  Along with the movie suggestion, I would say that if you are looking for some good instrumentals to past the time, his collection is a great place to start!

Grand Archives

—"Sleepdriving"

“Sleepdriving” By Grand Archives is off of their album “The Grand Archives.”  This album was given to me by a good friend I met while living in FL.  Those two years were filled with a lot of personal ups and downs and because I was living alone 1200 miles from home, I often just had to deal on my own.  This meant long drives, 18 year old scotch, and frequent trips to the beach alone, at night.

I spent the better part of one night/sunrise listening to this album on loop while I waited for the sun to show itself. The entire album is one that I hold near and dear, I hope you can find the same comfort in these songs as I have and continue to.

Fake Blood

—Mars (Herve Re-fix)

“Mars (Herve Re-Fix)” By Fake Blood, is a track that Twitter’s suggestions provided me with a few days ago.  I am currently typing a research paper, and drinking lots of coffee… this song makes focusing a bit hard, but I can’t turn it off.

I hope you can all share in this sunday’s solo dance party.  I’ll be in my room, you can be where ever!

Straylight Run

—Existentialism on Prom Night

“Existentialism on Prom Night” By Straylight Run is a good soundtrack to life in general.  ”Sing Like You Think No Ones Listening,” might be one of those lines that defines my alone time more than most people may realize.  It is a harsh truth to face when you have nothing you can count on other than the sound of your voice.  Trust it, embrace it, remember that when the lights are out, and you are alone its all you have for comfort.

The song ends with a very important series of lines -

“We’re glad for what we’ve got, Done with what we’ve lost, Our whole lives laid out, Right in front of us.”

My mere 22ish years may not mean much to anyone, but I strongly recommend that you think about those words, don’t ever forget what you have won/lost but understand that defeat means nothing if you can not learn from it, and victory is worthless without someone to share it with.

Utada Hikaru

—Sanctuary (KH2)

“Sanctuary” By Utada Hikaru is the english version of her song “Passion” and is a simply beautiful song, and was released in Dec. of 2005.  I first came across it while playing Kingdom Hearts II, The Kingdom Hearts series is one that has always been very close to my heart, and I suggest that if you have not played it, dust off your PS2 and toss it in.

Anyways, the song was originally release in Japan as “Passion,” and then rerecorded in English and released for the European/American versions of the game as “Sanctuary.” Both versions of the song are hauntingly beautiful and demand the respect of the listener.  If you take the time to listen to both you will find very few differences, but enough to make you want to listen to them back to back.  I have been completely obsessed with this song since I first heard it, and always recommend it to anyone looking for something beautiful.  In this Blog I try to leave the listening up to you, and not tell you to do anything, however I do feel like this is a song everyone should take the time to listen too once or twice.

I hope this becomes the soundtrack to something amazing.

Lemon Jelly

—Make Things Right

“Make Things Right” By Lemon Jelly is the fifth track off of the bands last album “64-95”(2005).  I know it seems like maybe there should be more as this was release a little over 6 years ago, but the band has been on total hiatus since 2008.  It is important to note that this album contains 10 songs, all of which are based on a sample from a song that was released between the years 1964 and 1995.

“Make Things Right” is a very relaxing soulful song that contains a sample from “Before you walk out of my life” By Monica.  The mix of her vocal samples and the truly hypnotic music of Lemon Jelly provide the listener with multiple minutes of sonic pleasure.  However the trip doesn’t end there, this album is like a time machine that takes you all over a 30 year adventure, and gives you something to put on in just about any situation.

So sit back, close your eyes, smile, and take a deep breath.  After you have done all that I hope you continue to investigate everything else Lemon Jelly has to offer you.  There are a lot of treasures waiting to be found out there.  Happy hunting!

xxxy

—Ordinary Things

“Ordinary Things” By UK Garage producer “xxxy” is the soundtrack to my return.  I have been absent from the blog for a few days due to vacation.  I know this doesn’t involve a major time requirement but I like to provide you all with songs/explanations that mean something to me and that I have taken the time to sit back and think about.

I found this song through Pitchfork.com’s “Best New Track” post about a week ago, and haven’t really gotten a chance to listen to it in depth until today.  Although very club driven and repetitive, I find a sense of soothing or rest in the five minute track.  After returning from Maryland, I have been busy with friends, love, and school.  ”Ordinary Things” for any twenty something student, however unpacking and organizing have been of high importance this morning and I find myself returning my itunes to this song time and time again.

I would suggest throwing this song on for at least one listen, see what it does for you, find out if you enjoy it, and scour this digital world for a little more from xxxy.

Passion Pit

—I've Got Your Number

“I’ve Got Your Number” By Passion Pit is a track off the bands 2008 EP “Chunk of Change.”  This song is one of the first four which where originally written for the singer’s (Michael Angelakos) girlfriend.  It is a rather simplistic composition however the lyrical content seems to have me hypnotized this morning.  I honestly can’t get the line “Have you seen cry, tears like diamonds?” out of my head even as I listen to other songs, or read up on my school material, and today’s news. If you enjoy this track, scroll back through my posts and find the one I made for “Sleepyhead” one of my all time favorite songs, and actually added to this same album for commercial release.  There might be some more information about the band, otherwise if all else fails, enjoy this song and do some exploring on your own to see what other glorious things Passion Pit has to offer :)
